SERVICES
The Beginning
Sigma Phi Omega was originally founded in 1949 at the University of Southern California by a group of Japanese women in response to growing anti-Asian-American sentiment that followed as a result of World War II and Pearl Harbor. We are the oldest continuing Asian American sorority in the nation, as well as the third oldest Asian American sorority ever founded. Since 1949, Sigma Phi Omega has expanded across the United States, holding multiple chapters in California and Texas.
Gamma Chapter
The Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Omega was founded at the University of Austin, in 1991. Sigma Phi Omega is the oldest Asian-American sorority on campus, amongst others such as alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Kappa Phi Lambda and Alpha Sigma Rho. Also the only tri-family on campus with our brother fraternity Omega Phi Gamma, and our cousin fraternity is Delta Epsilon Psi.

RUSH
What Can Sigmas Do For You?
Our sorority has helped young women adjust to college life for over fifty years. College is a time for new faces, endeavors and experiences. Among this whirlwind of unfamiliarity, being in a sorority can help brighten your path and put things into perspective. Along with providing a base for lasting friendships and memories, Sigma Phi Omega gives you the opportunity to learn about leadership, give back to the community, as well as discover potential you never knew you had. Also, please take the time to learn more about our sorority.
What is Rush?
Rush is a two to three week period at the beginning of every semester where potential new members are invited to come learn more about Sigma Phi Omega. It is also a chance for us to get to know you and meet you in a relaxed atmosphere. It is designed especially for girls to get to know what exactly Sigmas are all about, and to see if they too, would like to become part of our sisterhood. All events are free to rushees, and rides to events are provided as well.
What is a Bid?
In order to receive an invitation to join, or a "bid," you must fill out an information sheet, attend two out of the four rush events, and complete an interview. We will then offer bids after the end of our last rush event, which you may accept or decline.
Why Should I Rush?
Because it's fun! Many girls may feel that they are not particularly "sorority material." However, you may be surprised to find that Sigmas do not fit any particular sorority stereotype. Sigmas celebrate diversity, and you just might find a place in our sorority where you fit right in. The only way to find out is to rush! Besides, all rush events are free and there are absolutely no obligations for the rushee. This is simply a chance for you to see if you could possibly have a future with Sigma Phi Omega.

SORORITY
Mission & Philanthropy
Our primary goal as a sorority is to promote sisterhood. We hold many sisterhood events throughout the year to promote such values as unity, friendship and teamwork. In addition to that, each member must maintain a minimum G.P.A. School is an important value, and many of our alumni have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, and successful professionals.
Interested in Joining?
Are you interested in joining? Each semester, we hold a number of events where potential new members can come out and meet our active class. We encourage you to come out and get to know us! We highly encourage anyone who is not of Asian-American descent to come out as well. Please go see what event and information we have for you in the event section of our site.
In addition to sisterhood, we hold many mixers with other student groups, both Greek and non-Greek in order to expand relations amongst the student body and community. We also hold mutiple community service events throughout the year. As an active member of the Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic Council, we collaborate with other student organizations in promoting a variety of social causes. Our main philanthropy goal is to promote the awareness of domestic violence, a cornerstone of our sorority. Each year we host S.A.F.E. (Stop Abuse in Family Environments) week every year.
